Ahhh, just one? No can do. Must.....add......more! Kellen Tavadon, (The Obsidian Trilogy) Harry Dresden, (Dresden Files) Masterharper Robinton, (Pern!!) and I'm also lovin Kvothe , (The Name of the Wind)

3. Who is your favorite female character from a book?

Unfortunately, there aren't as many but...Lessa, (Pern!!) and Karigan G'ladheon, (Green Rider series)

4. What is the last book that you read that is out of your comfort zone, and did you enjoy it?

I'd have to say of Blood and Honey by Stina Leicht, I know, I know...not much of a stretch because it did have some fantasy elements to it, but it was mostly historical fiction and that's not really my thing. Especially since the actual events were pretty horrific :o Enjoy?....yes and no....But I did learn a lot from, and because of it :) and that I always enjoy.

5. If you could have gone on the movie sets of any movie and watched it being made, which movie would you choose, and why?

The Lord of the Rings...Fellowship. Oh so many reasons...The shire, Rivendell, the actors, the horses!!!! What a dream <3

6. What food is your most guilty pleasure?

Ok, guilty pleasure would have to infer high cal, high fat yes? So I would have to say, long-hots stuffed with Prosciutto and Gorgonzola. Add a big loaf of Italian bread and some extra virgin olive oil and I'm a very happy girl ;) And ~~maybe~~ definitely a nice Cabernet :D

7. If you could travel somewhere (money is no object) where would you go?

Oooooo, this is a tough one because I am really....really...boring. Disney World, that's always my first pick, but I would soooo love to see the sequoias in California...seriously. I just can't imagine the enormity of them and how peaceful it would be there.

8. If you could change one thing in our world, what would it be?

Wow, this is an incredibly difficult question. There are many things I would change point blank. I would definitely change the fact that not all people in this world have equal rights and freedoms. All people are entitled to an education, All people should be able to marry the person they love, All people should be able to own property, choose their religion, their clothing, their job, their lifestyle, and all people should be able to retire comfortably...not on poverty level.

9. What is something that you’d like to accomplish this year?

I have two more businesses that I need to get up and running this year. If I can accomplish that, and my home projects...I will be ecstatic!

10. What are 3 things that are very important to you?

My family, my pets and my friends...if I have all of them, nothing else matters.

11. If you could go back in time, where and when would you be?

I would never be able to live in another time, but to visit, hmmmmm...alright here's the geek in me coming out...i'm of a mind that if I were to go back to any point in time it would alter things...I know, I know, i'm over thinking it, but it's what I do...lol Gotta tell ya though, I wouldn't mind seeing Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire dance in the flesh :D

Based on the manga written and illustrated by Takashi Okazaki, Afro Samurai was originally published in the self-funded Nou Nou Hau dōjinshi magazine.

Afro's story: The tale centers around a set of numbered headbands. The person to hold the number one band is said to be the most skilled fighter and also to possess God like powers. As the story begins, Afro's father is that man.

The only fighter who can challenge him, is the wielder of the number two head band, however the unfortunate number two can be confronted by any other fighter eager to prove his worth.

Initially we see a very young Afro walking with his father while holding his hand...enter the number two, a gun slinging, sword wielding samurai by the name of Justice. It suffices to say that Justice becomes number one, and that, that single instance puts Afro on a path of vengeance from which he can not escape, no matter the cost.

Accompanied by his ever so entertaining sidekick Ninja Ninja, he battles through both foe....and friend for the ultimate prize, finding and defeating the number one and avenging his father...

The way I see it: This is one of the most visually striking, artistically rendered anime series I have ever viewed, and believe me....I have seen A LOT of anime ;) The use of light and shadow and the effective minimal use of color is simply captivating. It literally takes on a life of it's own...have I gushed enough??

The young characters of Afro's memories are beautiful, innocent, light and pure... yet as the story returns to his present life they become ugly, tainted and dark. To the point of being disturbing, a reflection of what life has made of them.

Justice

The bad, the bad, and the ugly:I think they overdid it a bit on the T&A, although, in all honesty, I think it added to the whole degenerate, grungy vibe ;o

Also, be warned, if you're offended by sex scenes this is not the anime for you...lol

Love it or Leave it: Love it! This series fits an entire storyline from beginning to end into five episodes and does it effortlessly, completely and satisfyingly. Even if you just watch it for it's artistic merit alone, I would highly recommend it :D

Z.E.O. is a personal guide to getting a(head) in business...Zombie style ;) Upon seeing the cover at my favorite bookseller, I instantly thought it would R.I.P appropriate. The price was right, the time was right, so I picked it up.

It's divided into two sections...Business Tactics of Zombies, and Your Quarterly Guide to Becoming a Z.E.O. in One Year, along with an introduction and the authors final thoughts.

Chapters range in topic from Zombie Time Management, to Crisis Control, to Self Motivation and I must say...everything in between. Comprehensive, would be the word I'm looking for...and It's loaded with kick a$$ Zombie illustrations!!! ;)

Believe it or not, this book is also loaded with sound business advise. If you've ever read a "Getting Ahead in Business" book before, you'll certainly get a familiar vibe from Z.E.O., but presenting those ideas in a way that compares business tactics to a Zombie's technique for acquiring brains puts a whole new twist on it, don't you think?

The way I see it: Z.E.O. is a quintessential spoof on so many duuuuull, boooooring business books. It offers a feast for the brain (valuable information) aaaaand a feast for the eyes (lots of bloody zombie illustrations), who could ask for more?

The bad, the bad, and the ugly: Unfortunately, (if you posses a sense of humor like mine) this is NOT a book to read in public places. My laughing out loud caused many a stare in the waiting room at the doctors office...be warned :o

Favorite Bits:

"A zombie is a successful leader because it never looses sight of it's ultimate goal, and it never compromises (like by eating just part of a brain, or a monkeys brain if no humans are handy)"

Number 35 of the 48 "Laws of Power" Master the Art of Timing- "Knowing when to strike is key to being powerful and getting ahead. Zombies provide copious examples of exactly when and where to strike. You can sneak up and eat the brain of the dedicated cop anytime during his beat, but if it's on the night he just proposed to his girlfriend and found out he got into law school, then trust me, his brain is going to taste even sweeter."

Sun Tzu's The Art of War, "Attack him where he is unprepared--appear where you are not expected." "Zombies are masters of popping up where people don't expect them and (more importantly) aren't equipped to deal with them. Zombies climb through holes in masonry and shuffle into houses where defenseless humans are waiting. They walk underwater (occasionally fighting sharks), and decimate weaponless tourists on tropical islands. Zombies take "business" to people, even if people aren't expecting it."

Love it or Leave it: I may not be quite right in the head, but I Looooved this book. It was delightful and incredibly funny. Be aware that I am partial to off color humor, but I have to say, I highly recommend this book :)

This anime series serves as a Prequel to the manga, Ga-Rei by Hajime Segawa. It depicts the life of Yomi before....well lets just say, before she had been attacked....and her strong sisterly bond to Kagura.

After the death of Kagura Tsuchimiyas' mother, she's sent to live, and train with Yomi and her adopted father. Kagura is destined to be a guardian protector, and will be part of an organization that exists to protect Japan from the demons that wish to terrorize, posses, and destroy it's people. She most grow strong enough to inherit and control the most powerful of spirit beasts.

Yomi Isayama, also a guardian, is a bit of a prodigy. Her adopted father has decided that she will one day be head of the family, and has prearranged an advantageous marriage for her, as well as bequeathed to her his most valued spirit beast.

As they train, she and Kagura become like sisters who would do anything for one another.....that is.....until things go terribly wrong.

The way I see it: This series gives me the same vibe as The Black Chalice (previous review). It has that very dark, twisted feel about it. Having not previously read Ga Rei, I was totally taken off guard by how the events unfurled.

The bad, the bad, and the ugly: Just a tiny bit of cheesiness...but certainly not enough to have a negative effect on the series.

Love it or Leave it: Oh so loved it. The characters were full of inner turmoil, It was visually feast worthy, and there's action to spare :) Ya just can't go wrong with that.

Malory’s Knights of Albion appears to be a series of stories found in an old church as it had been cleared for renovation. It is claimed to be the Second Book of King Arthur and His Noble Knights, with a different author translating each separate story. It comes complete with appendixes illustrating the story of how the second book was found, and also more about the adult life of the main character. It's very believable, and intended to honor Sir Thomas Malory.

This is the story of Alymere, a young boy on his way to Camelot to become a knight, and pledge his loyalty to King Arthur. Alymere is a beautiful innocent boy, but he is also very hurt...and very angry with his uncle whom he believes has usurped his fathers title and taken all that should have belonged to him. Alymere becomes a pawn in a game much greater than he comprehends, and the players are the very dark and scary kind. In the end he must decide between great evil, or ultimately... redemption.

The way I see it: This story revolves around choices, and the aftermath of those choices. When my daughter recommended it, I pictured cookie-cutter King Arthur and the Knights of the round table. I couldn't have been more mistaken. It's dark and manipulative, yet keeps you clinging to the chance there may still be hope....just a little bit of light still lingering.

The bad, the bad, and the ugly: If I told you my idea of the BBU (bad bad ugly) It would be a terrible spoiler...so alas...I will not. Let's just say that the ending was not what I wanted to happen, but it' what had to happen.

Love it or Leave it: Despite myself I loved this story. I loved Alymere and all of his flaws. He was tragically beautiful. As far as the book goes, I have to say this is a very fast read...even for one so literarily challenged as I...lol Plus, the chapters are on the short side and many of them end in mini cliffhangers! But keep in mind...Alymere's story is very RIP appropriate ;)

Oh, and I also learned a new term...pastiche, An artistic work in a style that imitates that of another work, artist, or period.

Love it when that happens :D

"Life is hard. Dying's easy." That's how Harrys story begins this time around. You see he's dead...or is he? As with all good Dresden Files, things are not always what they appear to be. After waking up in a semifamiliar Chicago Harry soon realizes that he is not in the world of the living. After some debate, he is tasked with going back to the mortal world to track down his own "murderer". The only thing is, he doesn't have his wizarding abilities, aaand no one can see or hear him. Good stuff right?...I know ;)

The way I see it: Classic Dresden, and then some. All of my beloved characters...save one, were included in this newest installment, and Butcher was kind enough to give me an acceptable explanation as to why one of my faves wasn't in attendance....kinda necessary to the story unfortunately. Fans of the series will not be disappointed. I can't tell you the glory I felt when it all clicked into place, although I must say...Jim Butcher makes you work for it. I was a bloodhound hot on a scent, and every time I thought I had found the source....bam! a river washed it away, leaving me to start searching in yet another direction.

The bad, the bad, and the ugly: Ummm, I tried to drag it out as long as I could, but as always It wasn't long enough for me ;)

Love it or Leave it: Loooove it!!! I've read so many of these I probably wouldn't need a map to find my way around Chicago, but it's simply not a series I ever tire of. They're stories that kinda sneak up on you. They seem simplistic but are actually the complete opposite.

I've always said these books are easy reads, so I thought it only proper to define what I mean by that. This is it in a nutshell... have you ever had to try to get yourself involved in a story or try to find ways to connect with a character.... Well I don't have to try at all with this series. It's effortless, It just flows and once I start, I'm immersed without even realizing it.

Oh, one more thing about Ghost Story in particular, I believe I laughed out loud more often then with any of the series so far. The Star Wars and Star Trek references get me every time...read it, you'll understand ;)

Her...An Indonesian Short Story Review

This will be my first time participating in Indonesian Short Story Month. It's hosted by Novia at Polychrome Interest and you can review your own short story through the month of August.

"Once you have finished reading any short stories by Indonesian writers, please kindly share what you think about the story either in the comment form or in your blog (leave the link in the comment form or pingback this post)."

Her, Is a story of woman whose husband decides he's not happy at home and remedy's this by marrying an additional woman ...simplistic right...wrong. The complexity of the emotions this "Perfect wife" goes through are so realistic, to be quite honest I wanted to give her husband a good wallop.

Her own anger, the anger and embarrassment of their children, the realization, and then finally acceptance that no matter how exceptional a wife she is, her husband will never truly love or be devoted only to her, and the turmoil she feels in regard to "Her". These are things that anyone could relate to, regardless of culture.

This story had me putting myself in the main characters position time and time again, and wondering how I would react if it were me. Would I be as self sacrificing? I'm not sure I could. I've seen women...and men in my own country staying with their spouse for similar reasons. In the beginning of the story I thought I might not be able to respect the first wife, but I found that by the end I did. She was much stronger than I had anticipated and I was thankful for that. I myself would not be able to make the same choices, but I found that I was happy she had some closure and understanding at the end of this story.

Ahhh, the bone structure...the cut of the jacket..the silvery grey hair...the hair, did I mention the hair! What can I say, I'm a sucker for grey haired men ;)

I was actually torn between two pieces who turned out to be the same character, Gen. So I added "Away" below. It's full of detail, the poles and the wires..I especially love the area around Gens' feet :D

When I asked Ms. Valsheim If she'd like to add anything about herself in this post she replied, "Well.. what can i say? :D I'm a self taught artist, currently i live in Hungary with my fiancé until he finishes his studies. I plan to publish an ArtBook in the near future :) I think that's all >.< omg i can't write much about myself xD

Now before you watch this and give me the Really? I must tell you that it's supposed to be a tribute to Ray Harryhausen’s Dynamation. You remember Dynamation. It was used in movies like Mighty Joe Young , Jason and the Argonauts, and The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. Well, maybe some of you are too young to remember them, but I do, and if you ever get the chance to see them, I highly recommend it ;)

What's that you say? That voice sounds familiar....well of course it does. Who could mistake the delicious Sir Patrick Stewart :o He plays the aged Sinbad, (his voice anyway). Apparently Sinbad is recounting his tales of adventure. This particular tale involves the saving of Princess Parisa from an evil sorcerer. It also includes the Pièce de résistance...da da da daaaaa...the cyclops :D

I've been trying to find this film, and honestly It's been a bit puzzling. I thought I'd gotten it narrowed down to a release date of October 2010, but then I see July 18, 2011. I'm thinking maybe it was a direct to DVD release, but I'm still not sure. If it's not abundantly obviously to you by now...I'm perplexed :o any help would be appreciated :D

When I spotted these movies in Coconuts I was so elated I got a bit teary...yes, I was really that excited. The anime version was one of my very most favorites and to be able to own the live action films was a dream come true.

This movie is about a college student, (genius really) named Light Yagami. He discovers a mysterious notebook, called the "Death Note", lying on the ground. Once he touches it, he's able to see a shinigami, (death spirit) named Ryuk, who reveals some of the books secrets, but by no means all. The notebook states that if you write someones name in it while picturing their face, the person will die. Although skeptical, after some experimentation....Light discovers that is indeed authentic.

Ryuk

Having grown up with a police officer as a father, he realizes that justice isn't always swift, and that sometimes the guilty do not get the punishment they deserve. As a result, Light decides to take matters into his own hands and starts executing criminals.....a lot of criminals, under the persona known as Kira. All the while Lights' father Soichiro Yagami along with the mysterious L, has been leading the investigation to hunt down Kira.

The Last Name:

The eccentric and childlike L is determined to uncover Kira, and being a genius himself, they are equally matched. Light always manages to stay a step ahead of him but L closes in little by little, despite the fact that Light has taken on an accomplice named Misa, who also has a Death Note. For certain reasons Misa sees Kira as her God...her hero. With her shinigami Rem, she is able to Look at someone and kill them....but will she be able to see L's face? In the end will light be willing to sacrifice his own father to achieve his goals...to be the god of his new world.

Rem

The way I see it: If I expressed to you all of the twists, turns and manipulation that actually existed in these movies this review would be full of spoilers...not something I would do ;) The deranged labyrinth that is lights mind was like a fun-house to me...such a good time :D The movies stayed, (for the most part) true to story. L, (who is my absolute favorite character) was flawless. Kenichi Matsuyama literally was L, he completely immersed himself in this role. Truly incredible.

The bad, the bad, and the ugly: They changed the ending. In my opinion... Americanized it. It was still good, but I am a fan of the...somewhat brutal at times, Asian style of anime and movies. Also in the anime series Light was always obsessed with power, and vocalized it often. They really didn't emphasize this in the films.

Love it or Leave it: OMG loved it!!! It was sooo much fun and Light was sooo messed up...quite the sick puppy ;) The fact that it did stay basically true to the story was big for me. The shinigami looked great, (it was eerie in fact...lol) and came across with a lot of personality. Erika Toda as Misa, also did a phenomenal job with her role.

Note: You probably would only be fond of these movies if you enjoy anime, or Japanese style films. I, being a fan of both....was in my glory :D

The Name Of The Wind

I have to preface this review by saying that I have agonized over the writing of it. I find myself at a loss for words to properly describe what in essence to me, Is an incredible work of art.

Chapter one begins at the Waystone inn. A small group of men are enjoying some libations while Old Cob fills their heads with wonder-tales, as was his favorite role. The unobtrusive innkeeper busies himself cleaning floors, wiping bottles and seeing to his patrons...the things that innkeepers do ;) Shortly there after, a local who has been attacked enters the inn carrying something in his arms. What that something is...and the events that take place as a result of it, I'll not tell you.....you have to find that out for yourself ;)

I will give you a little snippit though. It takes place a very short while later, when the innkeeper comes home, having only left a note as to his whereabouts for Bast...his very worried student/E'lir.

"A note? You sneak out and leave me a note?" He hissed angrily. "What am I, some dockside whore?"...and then...."It wasn't even a good note. 'If you are reading this I am probably dead.' What sort of note is that?"

I literally laughed out loud :D

We are then introduced to Chronicler who, as the name imply's, is a historian of sorts. His arrival at the Waystone is the catalyst for all of the story that follows. He has been searching for a man named Kvothe, "pronounced nearly the same as quothe." according to our central figure. Chronicler desperately wants to write a true accounting of Kvothes' life, for he is a figure spoken of in lore and fantasy, and only his true story will satisfy the young historiographer.

After some deliberating, they reach an agreement and the tale commences.

Kvothes young life begins in the wagon of a traveling performance group known as the Ruh. With loving parents and supportive friends, he learns.....he thrives....and he is happy. Weather it be music, languages, or woodlore, Kvothe is the type of boy with a thirst for knowledge, and the ability to master skills the first time around. Once a poor tinker named Abenthy, (who is actually an arcanist) joins their group, Kvothe finds that he is gifted with talents few posses. That is when...excuse the pun...the real magic in this story starts to happen.

His road then takes a terrible turn. Finding himself alone and having to survive on nothing but his wits, Kvothe develops into a very resourceful young man. Over the next few years, he has little in the way of refuge, and a scant few people to depend on. Although arduous, the lessons he learns here in the city of Tarbean help to mold him into the man he will one day become.

Moving forward once again....Kvothe is a student at the University. Having a quick wit and an abundance of natural talent, he rapidly moves up in ranks, much to the dismay of Master Hemme, (a teacher) and Ambrose, a fellow student who turns out to be exceedingly more of a problem than Kvothe anticipates.

The end of the story brings us back to the Waystone Inn. As it closes we gain some insight as to who has actually been the catalyst to the telling of this tale...but You'll have to find that out for yourself as well :D

The way I see it: For all of it's 661 pages this book went very quickly for me....too quickly. Kvothe was a character that drew me in, and quite honestly I didn't want to leave. As he tells his miraculous story to Chronicler you become Chronicler. He speaks of his adventures in such fascinatingly descriptive detail that you experience the events with him.

Although it didn't feel like it initially, the supporting characters had a strong presence. It's almost as if I didn't notice them at first, and then they were there, and important. A subtle feeling...and as I looked back I realized that they were ever-present and had always made their voices heard. A new experience for me.

The bad, the bad, and the ugly: For this I can only tell you something I thought, would bother me. Going back and forth in time....I've had experience with time-travel, (for lack of better wording) before, and I can honestly say that in some books it made me feel disconnected from the story to the point of distraction. In The Name of the Wind however, this was not the case. It was written so well that the transition from past to present, although not seamless as it's not intended to be, beckoned you to go from one to the other. Rothfuss is a conductor, a manipulator of the highest degree. He brings you almost to the point of bliss, only to guide you back down to start the process again, but never letting you loose the excitement entirely. (Seriously...talking about the book here...lol)

Love it or Leave it: Honestly, I could go on all day about how much I loved this book. I could gush and gush about all of it's amazing attributes. I could tell you how it stirred my emotions, how I laughed many times, how I cried a few, and how at times I wanted to kick some butts for little Kvothe...lol It was a book that, once I'd finished it, I went skimming through to find the parts I especially enjoyed....and read them again. When I closed the cover I had a smile on my face that lasted for quite some time, and as I think about it now..... it comes back to me once again :D

OMG!!! SWASHBUCKLING!!! You had me at hello. I'm soooo looking forward to reading this one and the RPG. I love Margaret Weis <3 On her site she also talks about the mistake on the cover and how there will be a reprinting. I'm hoping the get one of the flawed ones...I'm weird like that. I'm of the mindset that imperfections give things character :D I've taken the liberty of highlighting, (what I felt) were the particularly all consuming, make me absolutely have to get this book and RPG parts.

This story is a continuation of Thief of Lives. No time has elapsed since the ending of our last story.

Magiere, Leesil and Chap are still looking for answers, both to Magieres true origins, and to the fate of Leesils mother.

Magiere is a Dhampir, created of a noble dead father and human mother. Her one and only purpose in life, (or so she's been told) is to hunt and kill vampires.

What little information she has about her history and purpose, has come from Welstiel Massing, a man who seems to know too much about her, and whom she has discovered is actually a noble dead himself.

Leesil, a halfblood elf, is on a quest of his as well. He desperately seeks to discover the fate of his mother, who he believed had been killed as a result of his own actions. A guilt he has lived with for years.

Chap, a fey, self confined to the body of a large wolf-like dog, wants nothing more then to stop Magiere from finding out the horrifyingly brutal details of her past.

They are joined on this journey by Wynn, an apprentice sage who is able to understand Chap, and who's knowledge of histories and languages may hold the key to revealing the answers they seek.

After some debate, our uncomon crew decide to travel to Chemestúk as it is on their path North to the Elvin lands. This is the place of Magieres upbringing, the place where she was hated and shunned. Yet, here we meet the one person who loved and accepted her, Aunt Bieja.

The clues found in Chemestúk drive them even further from their Elvin destination, much to Chaps dismay. As they journey onward, they happen upon a dying town in desperate need of the hunters help. The choice to aid this town and it's people, brings our crew face to face with an undead vampire the likes of which they have never seen. One who is able to draw the life-force, not only from humans, but from the very world around it.

Believing the creature destroyed, they finally travel to the place of Magieres creation. As the atrocities committed to bring her into existance are revealed, she is confronted by her true enemy.

Will she follow this entity and fully become the monster within...?

The way I see it: The bond between Magiere and Leesil is cemented in this sequel, and the vital importance of that relationship is revealed. Chaps role as puppet-master and his conflict with his fellow fey are brought to light with much more detail this time around, (something I enjoyed) All of the gory components involved in the making of Magiere are laid out before us as well. Wynns true role and that of Leesils mother are yet to be uncovered.

The bad, the bad, and the ugly: Trying to put this into words...Oh, I know...this was the longest 416 pages of my life. It seemed to me that there were parts of this book that were completely out of place, almost as if they were just thrown in to up the page count. It detracted from the story to such an extent, that there were times I actually dreaded picking the book up. As a matter of fact, If I wasn't so enamored with the main characters, I wouldn't have.

Love it or Leave it: I can't say I loved it :( I can say this, If about a hundred pages of randomness were edited out, It would have been fabulous, and of the same standard as the first two books.

Will I purchase the next in the series? Not right away, but I believe I will eventually. I enjoyed the first two very much and I did love the parts of this book that focused on...well, the storyline.

Why Do You Blog?

I've been contemplating this lately, and I quickly realized that it was a two part question. Why do I write Blogs...and why do I read them?

Why I write them:
At first I merely wanted to have a convenient way to access other peoples blogs.

Then, I began writing a few everyday events to share personal experiences that I thought might help others.

Now, I write strictly for the sheer enjoyment of it. Much like building things around the house, It's a constructive outlet for me. As a dyslexic child writing was, (to put it mildly) a challenge, and as an adult....It still is, but it no longer holds the negative connotations it once did for me.

Do I write well....no. As a matter of fact I pale in comparison to so many that I read. I write much the same way I talk. There's no poetry in it, no beautiful flow of music to my words, It's simply something that makes me happy.
To quote Jehnna, from Conan the Destroyer "I go where I feel myself led"...and I am...led to blog. I know...total geek right! But it's always been one of my favorite lines...lol

Now, why do I read Blogs? Soooo many reasons, but I'll just skim over a few.

To see what's new and exciting :D I'm always looking for new books, not only for myself, but for my children as well. I have found a plethora of bright new additions to our library through the blogs I read. And because the posts are so varied, the fact that my kids enjoy different genres than I do is never an issue.

Someone else can be my guinea pig...uh...I mean...can give me their opinions of a book before I decide to purchase it...lol No, but all kidding aside, seeing a book through the eyes of someone whose opinion you respect is an incredible perk when making a decision to buy.

Once more with the dyslexia: I was unable to read when I was younger. As a result, I understand that what comes easily to many is coveted by those with the inability to partake. It's a privilege that I now take full advantage of. Whether It's reading Blogs, books or cereal boxes..It's something I do every day.

Last but not least: Many of the posts are so incredibly well written, they can be almost as rewarding as reading the book. Though they don't offer any spoilers, the descriptions of characters, story, setting and even the bloggers personal feelings experienced while reading the book, offer vast amounts if insight. Their pure talent leaves me in awe, and I am humbled by their mastery of the written word.

From the time I read A Companion to Wolves I have been waiting with bated breath for a sequel. Alas...my wait will come to it's end on August 16th :D

If it is anything like it's predecessor, this book will not be everyones' cup of tea. A Companion to Wolves presented readers with a bonding of man and wolf much like that of rider and dragon in the Pern series. However, Companion softens no edges when it comes to the brutality that bond may entail. Wolfcarls are men....only men, and they bond with both male and female wolves, sharing all of their emotions and experiences. There were parts when I cringed...there were parts when I was, shall we say...slightly uncomfortable, yet the rush I felt as I sped through Njalls' story was one I haven't often experienced.

August can not come soon enough for me :D

Covers That Make Me Say...Really??

I'm writing this post because there are sooo many book, magazine, video, and even game covers that truly make me say....Really?? So I've decided to share :D

In complete fairness, I'll also add information, and/or reviews on the current apple of my eye. For although their covers may be an enigma to me, that is not to say that they aren't amazing works. Dhampir...Thief of Lives Apparently, this will be a recurring event...lol

So, I've been reading the Nobel Dead series by Barb & J.C. Hendee. I was just about to start the third book and needed a cover pic to update my currently reading gadget.
As I said in my last review, the characters look so much better in my head then they do on the books themselves. Although I'n not completely averse to Magieres' outfit in book one...lol
Back on topic...as I'm looking for images I see these beautiful pics of what can only be Magiere, Leesil and Chap....yes...the ones I've been envisioning in my head!!! That was my "Really??" moment.
Needless to say I clicked on the link and....low and behold, there they were....the covers that should be on these books!! At least in my opinion ;)

This will be my fifth book in Quest The First.

Quest The First : Read at least 5 books that fit somewhere within the Once Upon a Time criteria. They might all be fantasy, or folklore, or fairy tales, or mythology…or your five books might be a combination from the four genres

I shall start out by saying that I purchased this book for several reasons.

One, the cover. The dog with the red glowing eyes and the shadow of a man...who could resist? Also the blood droplets and bloody hand print on the back...Ok, so I thought it was cool...geek much...lol

Then of course I read the summary on the back. Fallen angels..check

Fey...check Unknown father, got a little mystery there....check Sounds like my kind of book :D

Last but not least was the fact that I had been to the book store many times and always found myself coming back to it. It drew me in...so I took the plunge

The story begins with Liam in his early teens. November 13, 1971. Chapters are always headed with location and date, which I enjoyed. Anyway, as I was saying, the young Liam begins this story with a gun to his head. He had gone to see the riot at Aggro Corner, and was detained by the BAs (British Army). Unwilling to disclose the names of the rioters, Liam finds himself imprisoned in Long Kesh.

Before he is taken however, he looks up to see a mysterious man in a cap the color of dried blood, teeth filed to points and eyes that glowed red, watching and smiling at him.

The story then switches to Kathleen Kelly, Liams mother. She is a whirlwind of confused emotion. Worry for her son, guilt about her past, (and her present for that matter) and fear of what the future holds for Liam. Kathleen has never told Liam about his father and has always kept them apart. She is very...human in her feelings, and as a mother, relatable. (I've known people quite like her)

Father Murray is the family priest. He has always kept close to Liam and known the "truth" about him since he was born. The good Father is a bit of a mystery, and his true motivations are eventually revealed. Sometimes the best of intentions can lead to the most despicable of deeds.

The story continues with Liam in and out of unfortunate, often desperate situations. There are respites, (although few) when he does have some happiness in his life. In the end all of the questions are answers, the mystery's revealed and theres still an opportunity to continue Liams' story.

The way I see it: This was NOT what I expected, although that's not to say it was a bad thing. I expected this story to be more Fey/Fallen Celtic folklore war....and it wasn't. It dealt a lot with factual historical events and the effects they had on peoples lives. I loved Liam, and the fact that there was no big silver lining...no...reprieve for him...is very...Irish (fault me if you must, but we're not an, it's all sunshine and roses kinda people)

The bad, the bad, and the ugly: Harrrrsh much! Liams' story is not for the faint hearted. For me at least, its saving grace is that it doesn't go into too much detail when horrendous events do take place.

Love it or Leave it: Hmmmm, you know I had to think about that. It's certainly not what I expected, and generally not "my" kind of book, but overall I have to give it a love it. I found myself coming back to it again and again, just as I did in the book store. Also, and I quote, "I...am....a sponge", I simply had to research the events and dates, and guess what? I learned a lot.

I love it when that happens!!

Oh, one last note. The songs that were mentioned, (and there were quite a few) soooo brought me back. Yes, I was a mere youngin at the time, but I've always loved music :D

I've been waiting for this sequel since 2007 and apparently, I'll have to wait some more...lol I'm not the most patient of people, but at least there's a light at the end of the tunnel. I enjoyed the first two books very much, and for those of you who haven' read them I've added a couple of Publishers Weekly reviews I found on Amazon.

Magiere, Leesil, and Chap are happy in their home in Miiska. They're about to reopen the newly rebuilt Sea Lion and it seems that life will finally have some normalcy for the trio.

Since the burning of the main trade wherehouse the town is in dire straits, and its people have little to no money to live on. There are many who resent Magiere and her companions, although most realize the fire was a necessary sacrifice in order to rid their town of Noble Dead.

When a proposal comes to Magiere from the city of Bela that would earn her enough money to rebuild the wherehouse and save Miiska, she can not refuse....or can she? The offer would require Magiere to become the hunter again, and that transformation is something she simply can't come to terms with.

The way I see it: This book is written so that even if you hadn't read Dhampir, you would still understand what's going on. It delves further into Leesil and Magieres' relationship, which forces both of them to battle their individual demons. It also exposes many of the hidden secrets behind Chap, Leesils "Dog" and the infamous Welstiel, the noble who taught Magiere what she truly was in the first story.

The bad, the bad, and the ugly: A little too much background info from the first book IMO. Also in the first half of the book the Magiere/Leesil up/down, back/forth thing got a bit annoying. Lastly, the cover....In my mind, (and that's the one that counts right now...lol) these characters are a Lot better looking :D

Love it or Leave it: All in all...Gotta go with Love it. The initial annoyances worked themselves out. I also immensely enjoyed uncovering Chaps' story, as I find him to be highly entertaining :D

Things I've Learned NOT to do, from Movies and Books.

This idea came to me as I was reading a post over at Pen and Paper...
"YOUR DINNER IS IN THE DOG" The post was about occurrences that commonly go on in movies and soaps that would't generally happen in everyday life.
The following was actually the beginnings of my response, until I realized that human nature would instinctually force us to look back at our pursuer to see if we were still in danger. It's only this, and other stereotypical movie scenes that compel us to change what has evolutionally been bread into us as a survival instinct.
If I've learned one thing from horror/thriller movies, It's...Don't....Look....Back!!! Every time someone's being chased through the dark, creepy woods by an ax murderer, (generally, a scantily clad young women...lol) they make good progress for a while, and then Boom!!!...they look back. Of course, once they do, they trip over the proverbial tree root and the ax murderer does what ax murderers do...lol

In reality, is anyone really walking through the dark, creepy woods??.....NO! They're Dark... and Creepy, and usually have preceding stories about all the people who have been murdered there before the current unfortunate tripper.

So, if at any point in the future I am being pursued by ax murderers, monsters, ghosts or any other form of baddy...I shall condition myself to keep my sights forward....and wear more clothing :D

I was searching for new Science Fiction & Fantasy books when I came across this cover. Well, to say the least it made me p...a...u...s...e...lol After I came back to reality I read the summary on a few different sites and, low and behold...It sounds like an interesting story...no for reals, the story sounds good!
I think my "Really?" moment occurred because the cover is a bit soft porny to me. It sounds like an entertaining read, and I'm sure it would hold it's own without such an "eye catching" cover. I'm not big on romance novels, but if you're a fan this could be a whole lot of fun.

If any of you have had "Really??" moments...I'd love to hear them :D

Demoniacs are creatures that were once human. They're able to merge their bodies with just about any technology. Cars, motor cycles...even computers. They use them as a means to purge human kind from the face of the earth, starting with Germany. Oh, did I mention they're an epidemic...yes. They're producing more of their kind through the people they come in contact at an alarming rate. And the worse part is...no one knows how. Their ultimate goal, (aside from wiping out the human race) is to find the ultimate demoniac called the Blassreiter.

That's where the XAT , (Xenogenesis Assault Team) comes in. They're an organisation that attempts to contain the demoniacs and ascertain how they're able to spread so rapidly. Little do they know, they're not the only organization out there who has an interest in the demoniacs.

The way I see it: There are demoniacs that use their power for good....and not so good to say the least. Some, who have come to this power by choice, and some whom it was forced upon. They also have different levels of consciousness, ranging from mindless drone to pathological, (yet delusional) genius.

This series has a Large cast of characters, centering around Joseph, who may, or may not be the hero of this tale. All of the characters' stories are introduced at some point in the series, (both human and demoniac) and...much like life...you gain a greater understanding of their actions in looking past the surface.

The bad, the bad, and the ugly: As I watched the first episode, I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy this series. It was mainly about a motorcycle race and I didn't feel like it had much depth. In anime however, I've learned that the first one, or even the first several episodes are very much like the cover of a book...it doesn't always do justice to the story inside. So I continued :D

Love it or Leave it: Overall, I'd have to give it a Love it. There were many instances when I wasn't sure who, (for lack of a better term) the "bad guys" were. It really kept me guessing and did it in a way that I wasn't annoyed...lol Also the character stories were integrated almost seamlessly. I enjoyed learning about their past, and the trials and tribulations that created them and were the catalyst for their actions.

This will be my third book for Quest The First.

Let me begin by saying that this is my second time around with The Obsidian Trilogy, but I've never reviewed it. I had the itch to read it again and thought it would be perfect for the OUaT Challenge :D

Kellen is the only son of the Arch-Mage of Armethalieh, The Golden City of the Bells. As such he is expected to set the standard in both mage craft and behavior. Kellen however, is sorely lacking in both areas, and continues to be a disappointment and an embarrassment to his father.

Living in a "perfect" Armethaliehn society is a challenge for Kellen, who is stifled by the complete control the mages have over every detail, from music and weather, to the very knowledge each citizen poseses.

While searching the lower market for clues of his city's past, he happens upon a set of books that will forever change the course of his life. Through them, he encounters creatures he believed to only exist in wondertale, and begins an adventure that will effect the fate of all.

The way I see it: This is a book about choices. You get the very strong idea that the future of every race is weighted heavily on each choice that Kellen, and his fellow characters make. You also get insights into his thought process and how he weighs the pros and cons of these decisions. It's a birds eye view of the mind set of a 17 year old who has never been very good at anything and is completely unsure of himself. As the story progresses Kellen finally starts to understand who he's meant to be, and what sacrifices he's willing to make for the good of his world.

The bad, the bad, and the ugly: After reading this for the second time, I still have the same opinion...you have to get through the first few chapters for the excitement to begin. There's no instant gratification, but once it starts, it doesn't end :D

Love it or Leave it: OMG!!! Love it! It is one of my very most favorite series and it's starting out just as good the second time around. I find myself laughing out loud at times, and Kellen is absolutely endearing. Not wanting to give anything away, I didn't delve into detail about the other characters, but I have to tell you... the supporting characters are just as amazing.

Harry Dresden is one of my all time favorite characters. He's very...imperfect :D The Dresden Files are what I would describe as "easy reads" But that could just be because I enjoy them so much. Simplistic, funny, action packed, and a wee bit sarcastic...lol Just can't get enough!

This is my first Quest on Screen review.

Balsa is a spear-wielding warrior. She refers to herself as " a simple bodyguard" yet is obviously much, much more. Balsa has made a vow to save the lives of eight people. Her reasons for this atonement are hinted at, and then finally revealed as the story progresses. Upon entering a new city, she saves a young boy, (who happens to be the Second Prince of the imperial family) from droning. Shortly there after she is secretly called to the palace by his mother the Second Queen. She asks Balsa to take the prince away and guard him for the rest of his life, for his father the Mikado will murder him if she does not. You see it has been for told by the master star readers that the prince will be the bearer of a water demon that will bring drought and ruin to their country. Balsa agrees and she and Chagum begin their perilous journey together.

The way I see it: Rich, deep, complicated characters. Beautiful to the eyes, and compelling to the mind. Classic anime always contains a plethora of emotions and textures. Love, humor, betrayal...it's all there. The animators (ARTISTS) have simply outdone themselves in this series. The use of light and shadow, coloration, layering and movement are amazing. Fight scenes...to-die-for.

The bad, the bad, and the ugly: I just can't find anything about this series I don't like. Maybe that it hasn't been made into an RPG yet...lol

Love it or Leave it: A Ginormous Love It!!!!In my humble opinion.... It's a must see :D

The Dark Griffin

This will be my second book for Quest The First.

And my quest continues...This story begins with the early life of the dark griffin and his struggles to survive after his mothers untimely death.
It then switches over to the life of Arren, a griffiner, and the youngest to obtain that title. Although born free, he's also a Northerner by blood. A people known for their black magic and warlike nature, most Northerners are now slaves. Arren, although born in the South, still carries the black hair and eyes of his race. Eluna, his partner, a white griffin, is the only thing that keeps the southern prejudices at bay, for the black robes as they're called, are truly loathed and feared by the southern people.
In order to repay a debt, Arren and Eluna are given the opportunity to capture a wild griffin. This is where our characters meet for the first time, and where both of their lives are turned completely upside down.

The way I see it: The dark Griffin is a character of voraciousness and also an abundant amount if innocents. Both ferocious and childlike, I thoroughly enjoyed him. His emotions were quite simple, very black and white. Arren on the other hand has a great deal of conflicting emotions about who he is and where he truly belonges. He does everything he can to deny that part of himself so hated by the people around him. I believe they balance each other very well. It's a love hate relationship, but one of mutual respect. The real kicker to this book is finding out who the mastermind is. I was surprised to find out who actually put the wheels in motion, and how devious the plot really was.

The bad, the bad, and the ugly: Hmmmmm, well, although I believe the background info on the characters was needed, I wish they would have gotten together a little earlier in the story. I found myself waiting with baited breath....and then waiting some more.

Love it or Leave it: Even though the "actual story" had a bit of a slow start, I'd have to give this one a love it. The later parts of the book made it well worth the read. I found myself up much later than I should have been trying to finish it :D I'm very much looking forward to the next in the series.

This will be my second book in the Once Upon A Time challenge and my first for Quest The First.

And My Quest Begins....Magiere had been raised by her aunt. She had heard the stories of her father. The whispers among the villagers named him as unnatural. Her mother died giving birth to her, and her father moved on, not wanting to be burdened with an illegitimate child.
Ostracized and taunted by the villagers, the only kindness she knew was from her aunt. On her 16th birthday she was given a falchion and two mysterious necklaces, left to her by her father.
This is where her story truly begins.

Magiere abandons the place of her birth, and the memories that went with it. Living her life on the road, she soon meets Leesil, a pick-pocket...or should I say, catches him, and his traveling companion, a wolf like dog named Chap. As they journey together, they conceive a plan that gives them a reputation for being vampire hunters. After "saving" yet another village Chap senses something stalking them and Magiere finds herself doing battle with a creature unlike anything she's ever encountered. As the battle goes on she finds herself ....changing. Not understanding what's happening to her, she feels a hatred that she's never known. Magiere knows only one thing she must kill this creature at any cost.

The way I see it: It's interesting, I started out with one impression of the characters in this book, (not just Magiere and Leesil) and ended up with a completely different one. The authors introduced attributes of their personalities and pieces of their past in careful layers, which changed my opinion of the characters ever so slowly. For all that, I still found it to be a fast read, do in part, to the fact that I couldn't put it down at times...lol The biggest mystery of all of course, is Magiere who knows neither who, nor what she really is.

The bad, the bad, and the ugly: The only thing that bothered me a little bit about this book was the fate of two of the main vampire characters. I like to feel that characters deserve what they get, one way or another....greys are not my thing. I still wasn't sure of that at the end of this book...but then again, neither was Magiere.

Love it or Leave it: Looooved it :D I very much enjoyed the evolution of the characters. Especially Leesil, It took a while before I really "got him" if you know what I mean, and he was quite a funny fellow as well. I'll absolutely be purchasing the next book in the series.

On to my next book in Quest The First.

Bookcases

Well, the time has finally come...I have more books and games then home...actually that time has been in existence for many years BUT...I've finally done something about it. And my solution is...Da da da daaaaa..Bookcases :D. Yes..I've built them, much to the extreme pleasure of my husband. And here they are

It took me about two weeks total as I had to do them custom, (they're almost 9 feet) but but I'm really pleased with the results. As I told my husband...they're exactly as I'd envisioned them.

Once I got them done, I realized that building them was indeed the easy part. It seemed that EVERY room in my house, and in every nook and cranny, there was some sort of literature, video or game. It took forever to find everything and I'm pretty sure I've missed some...lol Most of the books went on the double shelves and I decided to store the majority of the baby books as my youngest is now 11, but some of them were too dear to me to part with in storage, so they stayed :D

Anyway, things are much neater now, and It worked out so well, I've decided to do some built in in this room as well...Quite the adventure

This is my first book in the Once Upon A Time Challenge. And also my very first review.

My Journey begins, and the rules are:

By signing up for The Journey you are agreeing to read at least one book within one of the four categories during March 21st to June 20th period. The categories are fantasy, folklore, fairy tales, or mythology.

Moon had always lived in fear of people finding out what he truly was, although he himself wasn't really sure. What he did know was that he was a shape shifter. His Groundling form enabled him to blend in with most societies, at least for a time. His shifted form however, very much resembled the Fell. A race of beings that all others lived in fear of.

Alone from the time he was very young, Moon struggles to conceal his secret and has given up on finding others of his own kind. Then, expelled from yet another settlement and left to die, he's taken by a creature that he believes to be a new type of Fell, and Moon just knows he'll be it's next meal.

The way I see it: Moons story is one of an outsider, always being different and wanting desperately to belong...even if he would never admit it. As a human being, the emotional trials Moon goes through are easily relatable. Lies, deception, fear of the unknown, abandonment...The author gives us a view of Moons very personal thoughts and shows us how he relates...or doesn't relate, to the world around him. Humor is used to lighten some of the darker aspects of Moons adventure which. To me makes his story even more enjoyable.

The bad, the bad, and the ugly: Having to find something I didn't like about this book isn't an easy task. But if I had to...and I do, I'd say that there were quite a few characters that at times were hard to keep track of.

Love it or Leave it: Definitely love it. It's one of those books that at times you just can't put down. It's what I would consider an easy read but has a lot of meat to it. The story is humorous, exciting, relatable and edge of your seat at times. I enjoyed it tremendously...big kudos from this reader.

Thus ends my first Journey. I believe I shall continue on with Quest The First :D

Five Places I'd Like to Visit..

I decided to do this one because I read it over at Here There and Everywhere 2nd Edition,
and thoroughly enjoyed it :D As a matter of fact, one of the places I've always wanted to visit is on the list. So, here's a big shout out thank you to Pat :D

Number 1: The Redwood Forest in California. To see the sequoias would be a dream come true. Being in any forest has always made me feel peaceful and serene. The smell of the trees and the soil, the way the rays of light come through in certain places almost like a spotlight on a stage except so much more beautiful and shuttle. I can only imagine the enormity of those trees, and how small I would feel in comparison.

Number 2: France. Ok, I LOVE bread, wine and cheese. What more is there to say

Number 3: The New York City Ballet. I've never been to a ballet and I would love to get all dressed up and see the Nutcracker in Lincoln Center.

Number 4: Westminster Dog Show. Also in New York. I'm a huge fan and avid watcher. I've been telling myself every year that I would see it as soon as I could make the time...one day

Number 5: Italy. Art and Architecture. I am a sucker for old world architecture and a lover of the arts.
